CHOCOLATE AND ETHICAL SUSTAINABILITY

As a believer in equality, Miss Witt is all about empowerment.

She has a passion for educating chocolate lovers about the chocolate industry and showing us how the quality of the chocolate is enhanced by the local community of cocoa growers benefiting directly from their own chocolate.

MEET THE CHOCOLATE PRODUCERS

Cardenas.

In January 2024, I travelled to Ecuador to visit my dear friend Susana Cárdenas, founder of Cardenas Chocolate. We spent time walking among the cacao trees at La Providencia Estate in Chone, soaking in the sights, scents and sounds of the first harvest of the year. It was a truly unforgettable moment: to stand beneath the canopy, hear the crackle of sun-dried leaves underfoot, and see the cacao pods in every shade of yellow and green — knowing these trees had produced the beans I’ve worked with so often in my kitchen.

Award-winning bean-to-bar chocolate made from heirloom “Nacional” cacao in Manabí, Ecuador.

Susana’s story is one of vision and deep respect. Driven by a desire to rescue lost and native cacao varieties, she travelled across Ecuador to reconnect with traditional growers and the unique terroir of her homeland. Her dream? To make Manabí the ‘Bordeaux of cacao’ — known worldwide for its distinct, regional chocolate identity.

Cardenas Chocolate is grown by Leonardo Andrade, a third-generation farmer and respected community leader in Upper Manabí. With over 30 years of experience growing Nacional cacao, Leonardo’s knowledge is rooted in legacy — passed down from his father and grandfather. His dedication goes beyond agriculture: he’s preserving a cultural heritage and uplifting the lives of other local producers in the process.

This is chocolate with a soul. Every bar tells a story — of ancestral wisdom, environmental care, and ethical production from tree to bean to bar.

Luker Chocolate

Creating Positive Impact in Colombia

B-Corp certified chocolate made with rare, single-origin Fino de Aroma cacao.

Colombia’s Luker Chocolate is known not just for their outstanding cocoa but for their bold commitment to social transformation. With over 117 years of experience and a mission-driven approach, they’ve created the Chocolate Dream — a sustainability initiative that strengthens farming communities, protects the environment, and creates real economic opportunity for families across Colombia.

Their cacao is among the world’s best — with only 8% of cocoa globally receiving the Fino de Aroma classification. Each region of Colombia brings its own rich flavour: fruity, nutty, complex and deeply satisfying. Luker’s entire supply chain — from bean to bar — remains in Colombia, which means more income stays within the country, raising skills and living standards while ensuring complete traceability.
